i finally decided i couldnt resist the new cobalt auto metter gauges so i bought all 3 that goes in the center of my dash in a 72 mustang.after carefully removing almost the entire dash ive ran into a delimma.the old gauges(oil, water, volt) only hooked up with 2 wires.the new ones require a ground,1 from the sender and 1 from ignition source.now,im not totally ignorant on rewiring things but ive connected to almost wire i can find and cant find a wire that comes on with the ignition.....or at least acts like it does cause the gauges just bounce and run backwards......hahaha.according to the directions ive got them wired right just cant seem to find a source for ignition or im gonna have to change all the senders maybe?the original wiring came with a ground that is split for 2 gauges,a temp which is red/white and an oil wire which is white/red and volt which is 2 wires -yellow and red.are they actually sender wires or ignition wires?any help is appreciated since im riding around with no dash hahaha.or wipers.........or radio........or fan.......haha.by the way i have the originals and the bezels in excellant shape and all 3 work if anybody is looking for original parts.

Well you can always run a wire from anything that gets 12volts when the key is turned to the ON or ACC position. Personally I would stick with the stock gauges but have them refurbished or find a NOS set.

ok thanks.i got it goin finally.yeah the old gauges are ok,practically new but i figured if im gonna keep this car indefinately i may as well have it the way i like it to fit my personality so to speak.its all nos mostly anyways.still have to order the cobra jet emblems to go back on the dash and fenders tho.but it seems i have the same problem with the water temp gauge as i did with the old one.my temp always stays around 250 as it tops out after it runs for a couple of hours.i know this cant be correct or at least i think it isnt.hope not.i just installed a new temp sensor.and it didnt faze it so far.can a gauge be out of calibration?both the new and old one????am i missin something here?should i put a new thermostat in it (190 maybe?)

15000K for a 72model, it must have spent more time sitting around than my 71 with 57000K.
I also was contemplating setting up three new gauges under the dash?. Keep us posted with the update. I removed my centre dash gauge cluster & know what a job it is!.

Look for the power wire to the radio. it is switched 12volts.
