I have a 64.5 with a D-code 289 and automatic. The car is equipped with what appears to be factory AC but a few pieces are giving me problems. I have all the correct hoses and condensor and underdash unit. My problem lies in the compressor. Can anyone tell me what compressor it should have? Iron or aluminum? What about the belt tensioner? How is it mounted to the generator bracket? Should there be a end bracket on the compressor and also one that goes from the top to the intake manifold? Pictures would be a great help! Thanks

Neal,
I have a '67 Mustang Sprint coupe with factory air conditioning, or what was left of factory air. Classic Auto Air http://classicautoair.com/ has helped me put back my system to stock condition.
I live in Los Angeles and made a trip to Florida on business. I stopped by Classic Auto Air and they showed me everything they do. They know all the correct parts for every year, they do it right. They don't to a one-size-fits-all aftermarket box.
The compressor can be iron or aluminum, iron is more common, but aluminum is also correct, at least for '67. I chose aluminum because it saves on weight. They also produce the tags with correct date codes.
The mounting bracket for 64.5 is engineering # 2882, Classic Auto Air p/n 7-132.
There should be a brace that runs from the intake maifold over the valve cover to the rear of the compressor. Be aware that there are two diffent styles, one for 64.5 - 66 and one for 67 - 68. Both will fit, the 67 - 68 sits slightly higher over the valve cover and is used on 64.5 - 66 with Cobra aluminum valve covers.
There should be an idler pully (belt tensioner engineering # 8678, Classic Auto Air p/n 7-147) and a second idler pully (7-157) was added per a TSB to solve complaints about belt slap.
Check out their website and get a copy of their catalog. It has the drawings that you need and all of what should go where.
You can also look here: http://hammar.dyndns.org/~djhamma/wiring/wiring1964.htm for wiring diagrams for the compressor.
I hope this helps.
Jon
