66 4spd Shift Boot Replacement?

I'm stuck! How do you get a new shift boot with that small hole over the "T" handle release or over the large base of the '66 4 spd. shifter? Is there an inside release for the pull-up "T" bar so that you can slide out that lever and slip the boot over the shifter arm? I have done a lot of other work on these cars but never this one. Would appreciate the help. Bryan

Hey Bryan,
I'm not sure if this shifter is a t-handled version or not. But maybe this will help.

Greg,
Sorry it took so long to get back to this post...teaching school & coaching basketball take up all my spare time right now.
The link you gave me to look at is helpful except the picture shown is a three spd. shifter even though they are talking about a 4-spd transmission. I have the "T" handle release which keeps reverse locked out until you pull it up for shifting into reverse. I could slip the new shift boot over the three speed but how do you get the "T" handle out of the way with my 4-spd.? The base is too large with the support and bolt holes for connection to the shift linkage below. How do you get the new boot on? Thanks, Bryan

I have to do this also on my '65 so I'm interested in how it goes from you. I haven't got to it yet, but my understanding from talking to the guy at the Mustang parts house I go to and looking at the 65 shop manual is that you actually have to remove the shift lever from the transmission extension housing. The problem is that you have two boots as there is a lower boot between the tranny and the opening in the transmission tunnel, then you have the upper boot (which I think is what you are talkign about. In my car, the lower boot is trashed, so I can get to those two bolts to take the shift lever off. Anyways, like I said, i need to do this too. Just passing along how I plan to tackle it from talking to the Mustang guy and looking at the shop manual. I suggest getting the shop manual if you don't already have it. Its an awesome supplement for any work you need to do.
Let me know how it goes.

I forgot to add; when you disconnect those 2 bolts so that you can remove the shift lever; you then have to remove what the shop manual calls the trunion and spring on each side of the shift lever to remove it from the base that connects it all to the tranny extension housing. You really have to see the exploded diagram in the shop manual as I am doing a bad job of decribing this.
Bottom line: Once you remover the shift lever; you slide the the lever through the shift boot, then reattach it all.
