i am looking to buy either a 65 fastback or coupe and would like some advice. the fastback is a 289 2 barrell, the coupe is a 289 4 barrell, "d" production. both exteriors are clean with little rust (one from mexico and one from ca). engines are original, but have been rebuilt in the last few years, new interiors, and some engine upgrades. the paint job on the fastback is several years old, but the paint job on the coupe is very new. both are selling for around the same price. any feedback on which one to buy?

It depends on what you are trying to do with your new mustang. If you're looking for speed, the 4 barrel will have marginally more power and the coupe weighs less. Value-wise, a fastback is worth more than a coupe because of production numbers. However, it may cost more money to restore. Because of the higher values of fastbacks, vendors are pricing fastback items higher than similar equipment for coupes. If the paint job really needs replacing that could cost a lot too. However, if you are going to restomod it (please don't though), go with the coupe. It will be more original and is less of a collector than the fastback. Besides, i'm tired of a million eleanor fastback replicas (even though that's for 67-68 fastbacks) and a coupe would be something different. If I had to choose one it would be the coupe, but if possible, I'd try and buy both.

I think you need to figure this out for yourself. ASk yourself 1. why do I want this car? do you want it for fun or more for the investment. Both are fun but the fastback would be more of an investment longterm, even though it may need more work. you will get your money back. 2. The "D" code on the coupe reprsents that it is a 1964 1/2. something else to think about. 3. Do you want to keep the vehicle 100% stock? If your already thinking of hot rodding the stang it does not matter if it is a 4v or 2v. If it was my self, for an investment vehicle "fastback" or a dirver to have fun with "coupe"..good luck.. let us know what your decision is.
