Do you mean the PerTronix electronic ignition conversion that replaces points in the distributor? If so, I think you'll find that most vintage Mustangs today have it because it eliminates the need to adjust and replace points. I've got it in my 66 Mustang. Easy to install and works great.

I am a points guy because I have done so many of them I can just look at the gap and tell whether or not I have the right dwell time. I was working at the factory when we had points ignition and I still carry a set in the glovebox of my 66 concours mustang. Uh ,, but that said, my 65 fastback restomod has a pertronix and its absolutely trouble free and yeah it was about a ten minute installation. You cant beat it !! My buddies 67 had trouble when the wire caught the cam and pulled out of the module, but they just gave him a new one and it works like a charm,,,,,, technology is great isnt it. Even my skills are getting old !!

I have the pertronix electronic ignition system in my 65 289 and I absolutely love it. I have had it for about 4 years now and have had absolutely not problems. I hardly even hear my starter turn over before the engine is running and it purrs like a kitten.

Another Pertronix convert here also. You can't beat the simplicity and you set the timing and forget it. It won't change like with points as they wear. It was the first mod I did to my present '70 Mach 1. I'd recomend you get the Pertronix coil also as the few problems I've heard of people having were usually with the stock coil. Enjoy your ride.

I have the point replacement Pertronics II model with the hotter Petronics coil. I have had some trouble getting the ping to go away above 65 MPH. I'm using 92 octane. Autolite 1100. The reason I ask is because I'm beginning my tri power conversion and I don't know whether to abandon the module for some sorta' Duraspark thing or the like. Harry

Try advancing the timing a few degrees and see if the ping goes away. The pertronix has nothing to do with the engine pinging.

I used the pertronix igniter in my car for about 10 years. never had one problem. I recently went with an MSD digital e-curve because my old distributor was the only stock looking thing left on my engine and it looked out of place to me. but the igniter was definitely a wonderful easy mod. never had any pinging, even with the supercharger. I agree with soaring3 it sounds like a timing issue. also may want to look into your advance curve and make sure it does not need adjusted.

Just put it on mine, and it solved a lot of tuning problems I had been having!

I've had one in my 66 for 4 years now and haven't had any problems as yet. It's been working real good.

I put in the point replacement, and coil about 3000 miles ago on a 67 289 C code, and have had nothing but ignition trouble since. Also replaced the plugs, wires, and distributor cap. After 1500 miles the car would just die, it would start and run great for a few miles/trips then die again. Finally found one of the little side coil terminals was loose on the coil, so got rid of the Pert. coil (by now out of warranty) and put in stock coil. All has been ok for 1000 miles now I have an ignition miss, car runs but under load a little rough, and the tack just yo-yos, so have checked the plug wires, they are tight on both the plug and distributor end, tightened both coil terminal nuts, and changed the spark plugs, and run the car in a dark garage and found no sparking in engine area. Have no idea where to go from here. Anybody got any ideas....I want my car to run smooth like the several who replied positively.......
