hello pony lovers, i recently bought my 65' coupe 289 2v,auto. its the 2nd pony i ever owned, bought my first one in 1966, wasn't smart enough to keep it but i love this one more than the first (may have something to do with R&P steering, auto and A/C which the first one didn"t have) lol. i am considering changing to a 4 barrel carb, not for racing , expecially at my age but just love the way they sound. would appreciate any advice as to what all this conversion would require and approx cost? would it be worth it, any increase in HP, fuel economy etc. already have dual exhaust. Thanks, have a wonderful drive. eddie

We all kind of like the 4 barrel sound. There are all sorts of ways to do it Eddie. You can find an original manifold and carb, those are getting pricey but sometimes you can find a buy. Or , you can go to a swap meet and find one of the plentiful aftermarket (Edelbrock,Weiand,Holley etc) small block Ford 4 barrel manifolds that are there and mate it up with a Ford, holley or the edelbrock carb which works fine also. The original ford 4100 4 barrel flowed about 490 cfm in the 1.08 inch venturi size and was a great carb. Try to stick as close to that as possible without going to a big bore carb. Even modified motors usually stay at or below 600 cfm for your cubic inch motor, it gives your motor a crisper throttle. You can pay anywhere from $200 to $600 depending on whether you buy new or hit the swap meets. A swap meet carb will almost always require a rebuild so take into account your skill level. Also stay with a dual plane manifold for low end power and driveability. You can get carb and manifold "kits" from both Summit and Jegs and save a little on "new". So go online to those parts houses and you will see what the cost is specifically.
One more tip , dont use the end gaskets when you put the manifold on but instead use a sealer like "The right stuff" from Mr Gasket. Ford manifolds are a bear to seal.Good luck , let us know what you put on.
