I have read that all you have to do is straighten a paper clip and slide it into the hole in front next to the key then twist the ignition switch out. Well I tried to do this but it would not come loose or twist out.

Is this the correct way to remove it or is there a trick to it? Is there a special tool for this or am I not trying hard enough?

Yep; that's all it took; with the key in; turn it to the ACC position and it should come right out. DId it a long time ago; but i remember it was pretty straight forward.

Works just like mike65cnv says. The key part of this is:
make sure you have the old key fully in the old cylinder when you put the clip in the hole and turn it to ACC.
