Hi Everybody, I have a question for concourse quality cars, whats the correct paint for the undersides of the front and rear valences, and am I correct in thinking that the inner quarter panels and trunk floor were painted gloss body color without any undercoating or body shutz? Any help would be great! usually I can tell but the car has been "restored" a few times so the orig tell tale signs are gone..Thanks

The underside of my valences only has a spattering of paint, and my trunk area is black. If you really want to make yours concours correct try contacting an MCA judge for the 1964 1/2 through the 1973 years. We can't link sites on here, but you can copy this addy down and type it into google to find it. This is the entire MCA site, but you can find out how to contact an MCA judge from here. http://www.midcomustang.com/mustangmcajudging.shtml

Thanks Soaring, with paint prices the way they are now adays I see no need it painting the uderside of stuff if it wasn't that way from the factory. In the same vain I suppose the inner front fenders wer not painted either, just what ever overspray landed? I can also tell for a fact that the wheel wells in the trunk area were body color but maybe because it's a convert, but I cant tell on the quarters because they both have been replaced as well as the tail panel. Even though I am not building a concourse car I always strive on putting the finish and correct hardware back the way it was built. even though it is a slight "restomod" Thanks again for the reply....

Yeah, if you aren't building it concours correct to show it at an MCA judging show, then it really doesn't make that much difference, as long as the metal is protected. I had my 65 professionally done and they sprayed the inner fenders semi-gloss black as well as the trunk, then sprayed an undercoating type of gunk on all the seams. Mine is not a concours correct car, but the metal is well protected from the elements. Concours correct Mustangs have a lot to be desired in the protection from the elements thing.

In driven concours you have a choice. The underside may be factory red oxide primer(with overspray is allowed) or it may be undercoated, but if its undercoated it must be completely so. Your trunk should be body colored paint. Charles Turner who was a head judge for many years (I think he still is) put out a cheat sheet for MCA judging and if you can find a copy of that its really like the bible.
