I have a 72 Mach 351 2V. The temp guage will go to H and peg when you turn on the lights or hit the brakes.Ihave changed the temp sensor twce and i am sure it is for guages and not lights.I tested the sensor wire and get a pulse on a test light. All the other guages seem to work OK.I also checked water temp with a lazor temp meter and it idles for an hour at 186.The guage shows high even shortly after start up.Could this be the instrument voltage regulator. Thanks for the help Gus

The inst reg also feeds the gas gauge, any issues there? Sounds more like a grounding or miswire issue for the gauge being backfed the voltage from the lights.

The fuel gauge seems to work ok.the temp gauge is reading very high early after start up.It would peg hot without lights while sitting in the driveway for about 5 minutes. When I tested the temp sensor wire with a test light it pulsed but not at the same rate all the time if that means anything. The car has 38,000 miles and seems un-touched behind the dash, but who knows for sure. Thanks for the help GUS

I have a 71 model 429 which would also idle at a medium temperature,  but when I was in traffic in first gear it would overheat, adding Water Wetter made a lot of difference, why not try another newer gauge just to be sure, also change the thermostat.

You should have a constant voltage & amperage flowing from the gauge to the sender that's only measurable with a multimeter/ammeter. If you measure it and it is sill pulsing, I'd inspect the printed circuit and connection on the inst panl and if nothing is found, replace the temp gauge.
