I have 2 cars with the same issue. 1965 & 1966, Upon aceleration, they both cut out and want to die. If I "feather" the gas pedal they'll drive ok, but until they're warmed up..... they sputter upon taking off.
One is a one barrel.... and after it's warmed up.... it's good. But the 2 barrel never gets any better. I know it's the acellerator pump... but can it be fixed without having to rebuild the whole carb? Can i just take the top off the carb & spray carb cleaner in the venturi? to clean out the buildup that hasd accumulated over the years. Both carbs idle and run fine.. it's just the "hesitation" upon starting off that is giving me grief.
Over the years I've accumulated all the back issues of MM & I have them going back to 1979. Is there an index of past issues relating to Carb rebuilds I can simply go to? I figure there has to of been an article regarding rebuilding 1 & 2 barrel carbs... but how to find that particular issue?

It may be the accelerator pump, or the choke not set right or any amount of things causing the studder.  When the engine is cold, take your air cleaner off and pump the accelerator pedal to the floor a few times, then check to see if the choke is closing all the way.  If not, then adjust the choke.  In order to replace the accelerator pump you have to buy a whole kit which costs about 20 bux.  Rebuilding a carburetor is easier than you may think, but if the choke is working, then that is what you need to do.  Or, send the carb to me and I will rebuild it on your nickel.

Thanks for ur reply. I'll check the choke this morning. It probably wouldn't work time wise to send it to you, I'm wanting to take the cars to the Good Guys show here this 4th of July weekend. Otherwise shipping them to you sounds like a good idea to me. Where are u located? I'm im Des Moines.

Hi, my uncle has a 64 mustang, excelent condition. And the carb has to be cleaned. There are 2 things that i want to be answered. 1. What is the best way and quickest way to clean the carb? 2. Is there any way possible to install a fuel injector? This way i dont need to nescessarily worry about cleaning it as much. But in order to do so, would i need to buy or find a fuel injector that is more expensive so it would be safer for the car? would it work? the car hasnt been run in 5 years or so, but last time we checked it worked fine. are there any major things i should check to make sure it wont effect the engine/car before trying to run it? please reply quickly. thanks
