On my 1967 coupe the previous owner allowed the VIN plate on the door to be painted over; does anyone know of a way of removing the paint without damaging the plate underneath?

TIA,
Bruce

It's been my experience, that anything that would eat the paint off will also damage the plate. You can get stamped replacement plates and rivets from several sources like Marti or Virginia Classic Mustangs.

Thanks for the response.  That is pretty much what I was afraid the answer would be; sure would like to have preserved the original.

Thanks again,

If you have access to an auto paint dealer, a short conversation may give you a better option as a last ditch effort.  good luck.

Since most likely there was no prep to the tag you MAY be able to scrape the paint off carefully with a single edge razor blade. Keep it level so it doesn't bite into the tag and it might possibly save your original. I'd do as described above first though and talk to a paint and supply dealer before you try this.
