I have a 1966 GT that I'm working on and I want to replace the fuel pump. I'm curious how difficult a task this is. I've never changed out a fuel pump before and want to make sure I know what I'm in for.

I read a brief posting about this being done on a '68 but there wasn't a ton of detail. Any suggestions would be great!!

Thought I'd add a couple more upcoming questions as I've been flying through the site:

1) I will be changing out the ignition switch as the key has warn down over time. Any advice?

2) I have a very slight tap on the right-rear bank, believe it is just a lifter tapping as the engine is very strong and comp tested fine.

Thanks.

Welcome Ryan.  The best advice I can offer you is to buy the Ford Mustang factory service manual. You can get a cd version online from in the $20's.  It will give you the best advice of any publication out there. I use my extensively.

Fuel pumps are two bolts and couple of hoses, not a big mechanical challenge. Make sure you plug the line from the fuel tank while you're changing the FP so the tank doesn't siphon to the floor.
To change the Ign key cylinder, insert an un-bent paper clip in the little hole, rotate the key to the ACC position and the cylinder should pop right out.
Several products out there for lifter noise. It may be just an adjustment but 60-70's Fords are famous for lifter bleed down.  You need to check the valve adjustment if it's a constant ticking. If its random the lifter is the culprit and you can try fluid products to see if you can get it to stop, else it's a lifter replacement.

Thanks

I have the following manuals: Chiltons/Haynes/and the full Ford Shop manual

I have learned from experience that it is usually good to ask as many resources as possible. I appreciate your quick reply. I'm sure I will frequent this board quite often.

Stangs I've owned:

1966 GT
1967 289 - C code
1968 289 - C code
2006 GT

Pics of the '66 GT, I am the 3rd owner. When they repainted the car in 1996 they screwed up the GT stripes, I'll fix that when I have it repainted.
