I have a 1965 mustang that is missing the data tag. I have determined that by the vin that it was mfg in NJ. It has a 289 200ph 2bbl. 2dr coupe. the production number is 179017. I'd like to find out all the info for a replacement data tag. Date built and so forth. Is there any source to be had to locate this information??? I want to find out all I can so I may totally restore it. Please someone help. Mike

Unfortunately Mike you are *** out of luck. Kevin Martin bought up all the paperwork as such from Ford and can decifer the 67 on up Mustangs, but the 65-66 can't be done. Your VIN, or warranty number, is good to go, but doesn't tell you the original color, DSO, etc. Only the door tag and a buck tag back then gave you that information. Here is how my door tag breaks down, so that you can see the information you need to get a new tag. You can guesstimate, and Kevin will make you a new door tag based on your input, but that just seems petty and maybe even illegal to me. Just enjoy your Mustang for what it is. Warranty Number: 5R07C221387 Year: 5 1965 Plant: R San Jose, CA Body Series: 07 2 Door Hardtop Engine: C 289 2v V8 Unit: 221387 221387
Miscellaneous Vehicle Data Body: 65A 2 Door Hardtop, Standard Interior Color: 8 Springtime Yellow Trim: 29 Palomino Crinkle Vinyl, Standard Interior Date: 15S May 15, 1965 D.S.O: 51 Denver Axle: 6 2.80:1, Conventional Trans: 1 3-Speed Manual

You may get lucky by looking under the seats up within the springs and find the original build sheet with all the data. I have also found the build sheets tape to the wiring harness under the dash. Good luck!

I looked thru ebay until I found a car with a close VIN and then asked the seller for the door tag info. I was able to get mine down the day it was made. The rest was just off of observation of what I had installed on it when I got it.

You can get close to your original tag if you’re lucky and willing to do some work. Do as Brabble said and look for your build sheet. Another place in under the dash in the wiring harness, back seat and under the carpet. jlg2002 had a wonderful suggestion in trying ebay also go to the VMF.com web site and under concourse section and give your vin# and ask for a date. There are quite a few gold card judges there and can narrow it down to a day or two.
As for color codes you need to play deceive. Look in the trunk and the interior after removing the inner quarter panels, kick panels, door sills and even look under the dash. Look in the cowl area with a flash light and remove a fender and look there. Look for that original paint.
Your rear end # If you have an auto the most common will be a 6 if you have a stick the most common is a 6 or 1. Look for a tag on the rear axle (usually not there) if it is there it has the rear end ratio on it. If it is not there then there are ways to tell if your ratio.
The only thing you are going to be hosed on is your original DSO unless you find a build sheet or have some old paperwork. If you know or can find out the cars history where it was originally from ect. You can make an educated guess. If not pick a DSO on the east coast I guess.
Get with Kevin Marti when you have your info and he will stamp you out a very nice repop door tag. Head up you will need to send him a check for $35 or fax your info to him with a credit card. He does not do door tags over the phone, he wants it in writing what you want.

Thank you guys. I have narrowed things down a bit as tags are on the trans. and axle. What I found on line is a car with the same identical vin# which is 28 numbers away from mine. So I'm closer. His cars info matches mine. My new question is this. When they built these cars in NJ did they do production paint runs such as all the ragoon reds then maybe poppy red then black and so on? Does any one know how many cars on average were built there in a day? With his being only 28 numbers off do you think I have the right day? 19T which I believe is June 19, 1965. Please give me your thoughts.
