Restoring 1968 mustang gt fastback,302-4v. Came with 3 speed from factory. Would like factory 4 speed. What is the factory id for the 4 speed and does anyone have a link to where I might purchase one. Also, I have the factory console. Will the 4 speed shifter come out in the same hole.

The correct number for your 68 302 in a four speed is C6ZZ-7003E with ID tag RUG-E2 (Ford toploader) it was used in 289 and 302 engines in both Mustang and cougar. But you can use any small block toploader 4 speed including the Ford pattern T-10. The gears vary a little but you wont notice the difference. Yes it will come up in the same hole and you can use the same clutch. Personally if I was putting an a trans and not worrying if it was concours stock then I would put in a T-5. That will also come up in the same hole but it will transform your car into a much smoother and better freeway machine(much better gas mileage). If you look at toploader prices they are not cheap and its hard to find a good one. You can get a T-5 at the junkyard out of a mustang (up to 93) and it will go in with a spacer on your bellhousing. You have to shorten your driveshaft about 3/4" but thats easy and change your mounts of course but its an easy swap. Mustangs Plus carries all the parts you need for that swap.

Thanks for the info. I may look at the t-5. I will be keeping all the old stock parts in case I sell and someone wants all original.
