i have a 65 mustang with a 302 and an aod trans. My car starts fine when its cold, but when i drive it around and warm it up it wont start back up. My headers run close to the starter so i imagine its getting hot, but i'm not sure what else to do. I'm considering getting a heat wrap and/or a mini torque starter, but would like to save the money before i do. My 302 is bored .030 over and has 9.5:1 compression, a big cam and an hei distributor. The car runs great, but after it gets warmed up it just wont start back up. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?? I greatly appreciate it. Thank you

You mentioned the headers running close to the starter.  So, is it not cranking when it gets hot, or is it cranking and not starting?

Yeah, we need an answer.  If the headers are next to the starter, and the starter is getting extremely hot, then that is your problem.  If, however, your engine turns over fine but is just not firing, we have another problem to solve.

Mugsysson,
The two previous posters hit it on the head. There's a big difference in CRANK and START.
Assuming it is the won't CRANK  scenario, you need to do something to the starter to protect it. If it won't START that's a whole other issue. JLG

Hi guys, I have a similar problem. In short: CRANK yes; START no.
My 66 289 does start great cold, but when it is hot is does not. The starter turns over and I can smell the gas at the exhaust. If I let it sit for 15-20 Minutes, it will start just fine.
Any ideas what this might be?
Thanks
G

...some more info: I replaced the spark plugs, wires, distributor, rotor and points. The carburetor was cleaned and has new seals. My guess is that it is either the coil or bubbles in the gas line.

Gas in the exhaust is a sympton of carb boilover or no ignition. There are a couple of reasons why, the most prevailent is high underhood temperatures that soak into the carb through the IM flange. The easiest way to solve it is to put a spacer plate between the carb anbd IM.  In addition, mechanically the carb float level can be set to high, the choke misadjusted or crap in needle and seat. From an electrical standpoint, when it does it,(not start) pull the coil wire out of the dist cap and hold 1/2 in off ground, crank the car, if there's a blue colored spark, the coil is not the problem. You don't say if you have elect ign, I've seen the dist pickup coils go open when hot causing a no start condition.

I chased the same problem with my Saleen for 2 years.  I added an S-trim, etc... & it would have to sit after running before it would restart.  The starter wasn't the problem.  The alternator was.  I had to go to a 100 amp alternator.

Have you tried putting additional charge to it when it's hot (jumping from another running car, or putting a boost pack on it)?
