1966 fuel pump problem???

I have a 1966 289 w/4B Ford carb that needed a lot of cranking to get fuel to the carb. Now no fuel gets to the inlet of the carb. I checked the fuel lines for plugging between tank and pump and from pump to carb inlet. (I  disconnected the fuel lines from the pump and blew both lines backwards with a tire hand pump.) After the line check, no fuel. I removed the fuel pump (the original Ford/Carter with 102K miles) but do not see evidence of leakage.  What else  should I look at before I get a replacement pump?  Thanks for your inputs.

Do you have fuel in the fuel tank?

Additionally, take a 16 to 32 oz bottle of fuel and put a hose into it. Connect the other end of the hose to the fuel pump inlet. With the outlet disconnected, Crank the car and look for fuel movement. If it comes out with some force it's not the fuel pump. If still no fuel, it's the pump.

When you disconnect the line from the tank, does fuel come out of the tank?  The tank outlet could be clogged.  Been there with my 66.  Fuel pump failure is usually accompanied by the fuel filter getting clogged by debris leaving the pump.  Also, make sure your fuel pump cam on the end of the camshaft hasn't loosened.  With the fuel pump off you can reach up there with your signalling finger and see if it is flopping around.  Been there, too, when I neglected to use Loctite on the bolt after a camshaft change in my youth.

thanx much for your input:  Yes there is plenty of fuel in the tank; I added 2.5 gals more to the tank to bring it up to 1/4 full. When I blew air through the line to the tank, air was heard at the fuel filler pipe bubbling through the gasoline in the tank. After that test I retried cranking but still could not get a drop of fuel from the pump.

I manually checked the pump on my bench to see if it was pumping.  I submerged the pump outlet tube in water while the inlet was wide open and pumped the cam follower lever by hand. The inlet made breathing noises but no air bubbles came from the outlet.   Could this result mean the diaphram could be ruptured?, or check valves stuck?
What do you think?

thanx for your input about the cam;  I'll check that out ASAP.

I blew air through the line to the tank and through the tank pickup strainer(?). air was heard at the fuel filler pipe bubbling through the gasoline. After that test I retried cranking but still could not get a drop of fuel from the pump.

You probably just need a new fuel pump.

For the time you have into this you could have changed the FP and known one way or the other. My opinion is you have a bad pump. Beware of ruptured FP diaphrams as the only place for that fuel to go is into the crankcase. Too much gas in the oil will ruin an engine. Look at the dipstick for excessive oil height. any thing looks abnormal change that oil and filter immediately when you do the FP change.
