For your 65 there are probably a lot of Ford engines that will "fit" but lets talk about the 302 or 5.0 engine that was built up to 1993 in mustangs and later in some other models. The engine itself is useable in early mustangs, has the same motor mounting bolts the same 6 bolt pattern and is the same outside dimensions as the 289. There are some differences but those can be handled. In affect a 289/302/5 liter is all the same. But,,,, there are balance differences, firing order differences, and seal and front timing cover differences oil dipstick location difference, all that can cause issues. The later block is also machined to accept a roller cam but will also accept standard tappets. You can easily a pull a late model truck block 302 and use it in your mustang but you need to do a little homework because later model engines use different sheet metal and add on parts, as well as being fuel injected which has to be dealt with. If your a moderately good home mechanic the issues should not overwhelm you, just deal with them one by one. I myself have a 93 shortblock sitting in my garage that I plan to use in one of my (65/66)mustangs after I put in a roller cam and heads(it also has the one piece rear seal which is cool).
