Hi
I am new to this forum and also new to mustangs. I have only one question. I have recently been given a 66 mustange coupe with a 289 automatic in it. It is in bad shape, but I was told it could be restored. What I wanted to know is, has anyone ever put in a newer motor like from a 2000 or newer v-8 mustang and newer drive train parts on a 66 mustang. is it possible? Any information on where to look or how to search for this info in this forum is apprecated.
Thanks jackson105

Swapping engines is a time honored method there Jackson. You will find swaps from the new 4.6 mod motor to just about any other motor Ford makes within these pages here and in MM. It all depends on your wallet size, your knowledge and need for speed. The 2000 Mustang used the 4.6 mod motor and its computerized so a swap is complicated because all its assorted sensors and modules must be transplanted with it. Still its been done and Mustangs and fords had an article at http://www.mustangandfords.com/featuredvehicles/5202_1965_mustang_1996_gt_powerplant/index.html

I've seen it done but they removed the shock towers and change the suspension to do it. More than I would want to try.

You stated that the car was in bad shape. In what way?
As far as changing to a 4.6L engine, it is not easy and it isn't cheap but it has been done. The car was designed for the 289/302 and these engines are smaller, lighter and can generate more HP and torque for less money. They are easier to work on, too. If you have other problems to address, you might not want to spend the extra money fitting it with a 4.6L. You can cop a late model Mustang 5.0L engine and an overdrive automatic transmission pretty cheap and easily install them in the car.
Good luck with your Mustang!

anything is restorable if your wallet is fat enough. metal work will take awhile if your doing it yourself and if a shop is doing it,it will be costly. as for the engine swap if you have the original and it's a 289 or 302 i would have that rebuilt and use that. first it will give the car the orignal look and second they are so much easier to work on then something with a computer and sensors. but thats up to you and what you want. and by the way yes the engine swap your talking about is possible...with another deep wallet. good luck

Hay Jackson105 - If you have another mod of transport take some time (say 6 months) and read some restoration books, Mustang Monthly, and other restoration/restomod sources to get a better idea or what you want to do and think you can do yourself. This forum is a great place to learn. The more you know about restoring/modifying your new ride the better off you'll be, especially when it comes to $. Get to know some folks locally (mustang club) who you can talk to about what they have done. Ask lots of questions. Good luck!
