While Ford did build a 2 speed automatic, to my knowledge none ever saw usage in a mustang. The early FM2 which was a Fordomatic was used in some cars in 1965 but the C4 was used in all mustangs in that year and was the only automatic to be used as far as I know. The early C4 had a different valve body which had a dot/green dot/and L on the shifter. This is sometimes referred to as a two speed because in the first "dot" it will start out in 2nd gear and shift to third and only when in the "green dot" will it utilize all three gears starting in first.
That said, you probably have a(three speed) C4, but you certainly can change it to an AOD if you choose which has the overdrive function your looking for. That swap has been discussed here several times.

My 65 is the same way, the first DOT will always start you out in 2nd gear, if you go to a transmission shop they can replace the valve body with a different one from a newer C-4 to make it like the typical C-4's (P R N D 2 L). If you have it rebuilt and keep it the way it is orginally just be aware the bands are no longer made for those type of trannys, I found this out the hard way. I tried rebuilding mine with newer bands that didnt quite fit right but sorta worked and threw my old bands away, so i was force to swap vavle bodies when I found out out about the band thing. Your old bands can be re-lined it just takes longer to get your tranny back.

Thank you for the advice, Yes it has green dot and More then likely is a three speed.  I have to ask what is and AOD ? Will this bolt right in or do I need to convert the bell housing at all?

Well take a look at this:
http://www.themustangshop.com/c4toaod.cfm
Its pretty informative about the swap. The swap is simple in terms of things you can do to your mustang, but not necessarily simple for the newcomer. If you have taken a trans out before, then you can do this. The AOD is a newer ford trans with overdrive, it has an integral bellhousing and it will require you shorten your driveshaft by a little but its a great swap that transforms the old beast into a much more civil, quiet freeway runner. The details are at that site also. Good luck
