289 motor mounts

I recently broke one of the motor mounts on my '65 289 coupe. I finally figured out bought the correct replacement mounts for my late-year 65 Mustang, but when I went to re-install the one that was bad I noticed that it made the engine sit lower in the bay and at an angle. I came to discover that the previous owner had taken the motor mounts off and modified them by welding and drilling new holes on the engine side of the mount.

If I intstall two new motor mounts it looks like i will not be able to re-install the frame crossmember because the engine will sit too low and the oil pan will interfere. Should I just try to fab new mounts with the ones I bought like the old owner did? I also saw the article on adjustable motor mounts in my current Mustang Monthly subcsription. I want to find a long-lasting and good fix instead of just tring to rig a cheap/easy alternative.

Any ideas?

I am a little stumped at your question there blue. The stock motor mounts may be slightly lower but with the correct oil pan there is not a clearance problem with the crossmember. Have you tried that? The adjustable mounts are meant to alleviate slight problems that might occur in alignment or clearance with aftermarket parts. Whether they have enough adjustment to give you the height you had before is a guess. I guess I dont understand why it was lifted. What isnt stock on it ?

Yeah I'm kind of stumped on this one too.  I have one piece "ear style" mounts that although can be exchanged side to side which would move the engine fore or aft in the car, the height is the same. I see a stud type mount for early 65 cars(before 11-65)and that's a whole different type of mount. You can but the late style MM frame brakets and late style MM if you want a stock appearance.(NPD catalog pg 98 for your reference)

It is definitely the later year motor mounts that are for my car. As for the oil pan...I bought a new OEM pan (as well as motor mounts) from Mustangs Unlimited because the old one had been bent and punctured from the breaking of the old motor mount. Why pieces A, B, and C of this puzzle aren't fitting together, I really don't know. I have only had the car for a year and have attempted to contact previous owner, but they have been slow to answer any of my questions. Could a newer year 289 have different mounting locations? The shock towers are in good condition and don't seem to be modified. I am taking it to a friend-of-a-friend's shop this saturday (weather permitting) and hopefully his knowledge can help, but this whole situation seems odd to me. Everything is stock or OEM on the car with no major or minor mods noticed.

I am a tireless learner and love to get hands on experience, but this thing is driving me insane!!!

Yeah I understand Blue,,,, its a tough one. The motor mount holes are the same on all year 289's. I have heard of a lot of problems with motor mounts because different manufacturers have made some that are oddball. Their is an article here in MM about having to go back to the store to get as many as three or four of the mounts until one fit correctly,,so you might be seeing bad parts. I know its tougher in the UK to get your hands on three or four mounts but it might be necessary.

Look at http://www.mustangmonthly.com/techarticles/mump_0811_how_to_install_adjustable_engine_mounts/index.html

They had a car with some prior damage and it tweeked the distance between the mounts,,, there is some good info there for you. You may have had previous damage also.

I took it to a local guru and he believes that the engine frame mount brackets are not for the OEM motor mounts. He believes that the car had an L6 before and someone tried to patch in a 289 and did an incomplete job. I am buying correct parts and fixing the problem this weekend.....I hope.

Your vin number will tell you what motor was originaly in the car.  The 5th didgit, if its an A, C, D, or K, it was a 289.  If its a T its an L6.

The VIN does show a 289. Therefore, after long hours and late nights of thinking about it, I am opting to bypass the trial and error tactic. I noticed in my Mustang Monthly subscription (and mechanicalguy48's post) that I can replace the whole assembly with a new adjustable engine mount system. I am online now at Mustangs Plus and about to order the Ron Morris Performance motor mount set and hopefully install them next weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

i am having the same problem in 1967 coupe with a 68 302. i had a straight 6 the oil pan is hitting the tubular crossmember. please let me know if you resolve your problem. are some of the frame mounts different on some cars? some motor mounts are taller, but parts stores don't offer shorter ones any longer. if you reverse frame mounts, engine sits too far back. i'm confused!!!!

I have ordered the new restomod brackets that mechanicalguy48 suggested in his link (http://www.mustangmonthly.com/techarticles/mump_0811_how_to_install_adjustable_engine_mounts/index.html). They are do to arrive today and I will be installing them toward the end of this week. From my reading and research, this is one of the best no-hassle ways to fix this problem (as long as complete originality is not a problem).

I will keep you posted. Take a look at the link. It's a great find.

1967 and 1968 convertibles had a different style bracket and mount that looked the same. they are now obsolete and unheard of anywhere. if u have these frame mounts, new motor mounts will not fit. nobody can tell me what the difference is or when they went obsolete, but if you have these brackets or mounts they will not work with anything. a lot of 65 went from the original stud type mount to the bolt through style. could these have been switched at some point?
