Turning over and dying

Ok, so here's the problem:

I have a 65 'stang with a 91 302 that has been converted to carb. The ignition is electronic with a points eliminator system in the distributor, electric radiator fan. Now the problem.

A few months ago some of my wires burned out, so I rewired them and eventually got the car to start. It turned over, and after a few seconds it died. I worked with the carb and eventually got it to idle for about thirty seconds, then it died. When it idled I would hit the gas and the car would immediately bog out and the engine shut off. The timing may be off, I had to take the distributor out to replace the points eliminator. Any ideas as to the problem?

I've checked all the lines at the connections and they seem good, but as for the hoses I can't really be sure, the rubber has steel braid overlay.

Ohh geez, the problems could be many. Maybe if you get a couple of answers we can hit the big ones. Of course the timing is first, when you change over a late model motor the timing marks are probably off because you use an old front cover with timing marks that are wrong for that engine, so you need to find top dead center and mark it then time from that. The next would be carburetion, you didnt say what kind of carb and makes a difference. Check the float level and if its a holley you probably need to change the power valve because one backfire and it wont idle because the power valve is leaking. So many more,,,,,, you have to start and check one by one all your lines and make sure your plug wiring is in the correct firing order.

If it starts and idles for a few seconds then stops, I would first suspicion the carburetor settings.  Double check the float height to make sure you are getting plenty of fuel to the engine.  Adjust the idle adjustment screws to about 2 1/4 turn out then adjust from there once the engine stays running.  Replace the fuel filters.  Take the fuel line off the carb and put the end in a jar or can and have someone turn the engine over.  If you get a good supply of fuel from the line, then your pump is OK, but if it seems weak and sparodic, then you might want to switch your fuel pump to a new one.  I am not ruling out the electronics, but your description leads me directly to a fuel supply problem.  If the problem persists, I would overhaul the carburetor.

If it runs for a while and "bogs" when you give it the gas, it sounds like it could be flooding, and I would suspect the floats are set too high.  Is this a new carb, or a used carb?

Like the above guys mentioned, it could be several things, but this is a good place to start.
