Just wondering if I should put rtv on the corners of a rubber oil pan gasket, or if that's not really needed.  I've received conflicting advice.

No RTV is needed on an oil pan gasket.  RTV is only used on the corners of intake manifolds.

Is that just on these cars?  I've had other cars that it was recommended to only use rtv as an oil pan gasket and for the thermostat gasket.

I have always put a small dab of rtv in the corners of oil pans and IM gaskets. Its a hard area to seal and it does no harm ( and it prevents a leak and another teardown)

If the pan ever needed to pulled off again could the rubber gasket be reused?

Most likely, but with the cheap cost of gaskets, why would you want to do that?  Use the RTV as you wish, but it won't make the gasket seal any better.

This gasket, in my opinion, is quite expensive.  Nearly $50 for one gasket.  The most I've paid for a gasket that wasn't a set of head gaskets.  I just don't like the cork alternative.

Everyone has a little different take on it I guess. I don't use RTV I use "the right stuff" which is close but this stuff seals like a mother. I use it at the transitions which is in line with what JLG is saying I think. Where the front and rear main seals meet the pan gasket is where I would use a small amount to make the transition seal better. For an intake manifold I never use end seals but a good line of "the right stuff" there as well as around the water crossover seems to work best for me. I would have to be desperate to reuse a gasket( I have been a few times in the past).

Well, if you re-use the gasket, and it leaks, you have just spent more than 50 bux in labor, only to have to buy a new gasket anyway.  I don't use cork gaskets either.

I guess it depends, if I pull it off in a few months I may try to reuse it if it loos good.  If I pull it off in a year or more I'll probably just replace it.

mechanicalguy48, is "the right stuff" available at any auto parts store?

Yeah, it comes in a pressurized can, its not cheap but its the best I have seen at sealing. I got it a NAPA store but I have seen it at others also.

Sounds like it's probably a pain to get off later, when you have to remove the gasket.

I would call that a "plus" not a concern

Me too.  RTV is not the easiest to get off later either.  A good putty knife and elbow grease and finish up with a wire wheel is all you need.

Right. I was considering it a plus, just foreboding the day when I would have to take it off.
