Does anyone have any tips on safely removing the trim without damaging it?

I haven't done this in quite a few years.
Try to locate where the clips are holding on the trim and work in those areas. The farther away you are from those points the more likely you are to bend the trim. Try to work the trim up slowly and evenly at every point.
The clips may or may not come out with the trim. Make sure you inspect where the trim meets the clips before re-installing. The clips may have caused minor damage but it can be carfully fixed.
Good Luck

Thank you, another question. Is there a special tool that would help release the clips, or do i just use a small pry bar, and it goes without saying i will definitely take my time!

There is a tool available from most of the online suppliers. I did not need to use it though. Good advice from gkrone: Go slow and avoid bending the molding and it will come right off. You can also buy replacement clips from the online folks, (some will come off)

Protect the paint by laying down two layers of 2 inch wide blue painters tape. It helps protect against scratching a/o chipping the paint.
