I have a '67 Mustang with a 289 and am about to put the top end end kit wth new heads, intake, carb and cam shaft.  I would like to talk to a few people that have put this kit on to see how you liked it.  What problem if any you may have had and if the power advertised, 367 hp, is about right.

I just finished building my motor for my 67.  I have the Edelbrock top end kit, but haven’t turned it over yet.  I’m a couple weeks away from dropping the motor in.  One thing I wasn't aware of prior to installing. With the aluminum cylinder heads, you have to drill 1/8" holes into the block, by the 1st and 5th cylinders for water passage and steam.  Being a new restorer of old mustangs, this seamed bizarre and scary to me.

lethal67, thanks for the reply.  i look forward to hearing how it runs.  How did you know you needed to drill the holes, how deep and where to drill them?  Are they really necessary?  Did you do them yourself or did you have a machine shop do it?  Thanks Jim.

I sure would like to hear from anyone else who has installed the kit and has it running.

yes, i did it myself, the instructions out line it well, use a high perfromance head gasket, from edelbrock or felpro, and the alighnment mark is already layed out in the gasket.  Use a quality drill bit,  drill slow, and take precaution so no shavings get in it.  i say about 1/2" to 3/4" you will feel the bit drown into the watter jacket.  Thats where you stop.  The instructions lay everything out.  I guess the concern is with out the holes, the steam can be trapped and lead to overheating?

Another question,  were you able to use standard size valve covers?

that depends on the rocker arm.  Are you using stamped steel, or a taller roller rocker?

i am using lunati's 1.6 voo doo roller rocker.  I am trying to get everything i can out of this set up.  Since roller rockers are taller then stamped steel, i need to use a taller valve cover.  I am going with edelbrocks elite series, i found a nameless one at summit so thats what i am using.  how about you?

ohh, its not that hard, lot easier then i thought it would be.  Just think that its dumb, because i dont like drilling hole in something that worked well for 40 plus years!

jim, when you do this kit, you may want to think about upgrading the ignition system while your at it.  I am going with the ready to run msd set up, that way i wont have to screw with the points anymore

Lethal,
Nice job on your engine.  Your methods and thought processes are very appropriate for the work your doing. Good luck and keep us informed on your progress.
