My 65 mustang coupe v6, has always needed a couple of tries before it started. On one cold morning I was trying to start it up and it took extra attempts and then finally it stop cranking all together. Now it will not say a word. The dash lights just comes on. The battery is new. Where do I start to find the problem?
Several things can cause this. Electrical connections, defective starter, defective solenoid, worn out starter switch, defective neutral safety switch (on automatic transmission cars), and wiring. Clean your battery connections first, as this is a common problem. They can look good but not be good. If you have those $1 repair terminals on the battery cables, take them apart and clean them, too. Be safe and disconnect the negative side first and clean the postitive while the negative is disconnected. Check and clean the connections on the solenoid while the negative battery terminal is disconnected. Check and clean the ground connection on the engine block (follow the negative battery cable). If this doesn't help...Using a voltmeter, check to see that you have 12 volts on the "S" connection of the solenoid while someone is trying to start the car. If you do, move to the starter side (big terminal) of the solenoid and see if you have 12V there. If you have 12V at "S" and nothing on the starter side, the solenoid is probably bad. You should hear the solenoid click when you put the key in the start position. The +12 connection on the starter is another potential problem. If the solenoid seems to work (clicks when trying to start and 12V seen at the big terminal going to the starter), the starter or starter cable is bad. If you don't see 12V at the solenoid S terminal when the key is in the start position, you likely have an ignition switch or wiring problem. You can take a length of wire and connectr one end to the +battery terminal and touch it to the S terminal on the solenoid and the starter should spin. Be careful not to short the battery to ground or cause any sparks near the battery. Good luck.

Pull the headlights on and attemp to crank the engine, if the lights dim way down its the cable connections or battery. Else it's in the controls and you'll have to t-shoot per above.
Once you solve your cranking problem, check the points gap in your distributor ( if you still have points ). Back in the day, cold weather would bring out a too close gap by hard starting on cold days that warm days wouldn't. Go with Petronix.
