Helllo all,

I am new to the world of classic mustangs (so forgive me if I sound repetitive). I recently purchased a 1966 Mustang with a i6 with a 3 speed manual transmission. I would like to convert this to a 5 speed. I would like to keep the i6 and build up on that. I've seen alot of Stangs with 289 or 302 swaps but I just want to be a little different (my way of saying i can't afford a proper swap at the moment).

So if anyone knows what the best car to pull the tranny from that would fit nicely with the i6, I would be greatly appreciative for any assistance.

The T5 your looking for is the same one used in V8 applications. Namely the 85-93 T5 from mustangs. The last three years there being the better ones. There are lots of T5's on the market so you should be able to pick one up fairly cheap(make sure its a WC or world class T5). The trick with the six cylinder is that Ford changed bellhousings often and the 66 has a one year housing. So you have to have the correct adaptor plate for that year and then be carefull because several different clutches were used also so you need the right spline to fit up to that T5. Modern Driveline carries the parts you will need, I expect some others do also. You will need a clutch, adaptor plate, trans mount and crossmember and new yoke. Then your driveline will have to be shortened to accomodate the extra length. It sounds tougher then it is. It will really improve your driving and gas mileage too. Good luck

Ford Mustang When looking for your next vehicle, think about the Ford Mustang, a stylish car with nice features. You also might want to research the Ford Explorer and the Lincoln MKS.
