What do you guys recommend for RIM / tire size on a 68 Fastback?
Please send rim size / backspace and tire size...
I am thinking of the Torque Thrust "D" 's...

All the same size and then largest front and largest rear without having to roll the fender lips.

Thanks

Hello Mike,

The size I have on my '68 is P225/60R15 all four tires.  The brand is BFG/Radial T/As. The wheels are alum. Shelby Cobra, correct for the year.

Hope this helps.

Regards, John

THANKS DODGESTANG !!!

Mechanical Guy - Thanks, Yes I have read this article before, but it is on a 65 Coupe...

Williaj6 - Thanks, you didn't mention backspace...

WHAT I REALLY WANT to know is:

Torque Thrust "D" Rims

I was thinking of 15 X 7 and 15 X 8 Rims from NPD... BUT then I opened summit and jeggies catalogs and saw all the other (16X, 17X ... Etc.) sizes...

I would like people to tell me what they are running WITHOUT ROLLING THE FENDER LIPS, and NOT having the tires rub inside or outside.  IE: What is the LARGEST tire I could put on a 15 X 8 rim and not have issues ???  Same for a 16, 17, and 18...  I am NOT a low profile (tire) type of guy, I like to see SOME sidewall...

THANKS GUYS !!! and Gals !!!

Gentlemen,

I am sorry.  I thought you would pick up by the tire size. 225/60R15  This denotes a 15 inch tire size my wheels are are 15 X 7.  Next time I am out in the shop I will check the back space on the alum. wheels.

It won't be too much trouble because I am rebuilding the front end and the tires are off the car.

Regards, John

The tire fitment chart(downloadable pdf) at this link gives info on what works on what year and if mods were used or not. Most on the list no mods were made. 15, 16, 17, 18 what backspacing with each tire size. Everything you are asking. Pick your size wheel and go down the list until you reach a tire size where they start modifing things and stop. Looks like 15X8s are no go on the front. Lots more fits 15X7s, 3.75 and 4.25 all with 225-60x15.

I have heard lots of things, but want guidance from people who have actual experience...  One "Source" told me that I could go 15 X 7 with 245 x 60 x 15's on the front, and 15 X 8.5 with 275 x 60 x 15's on the back.
I have disk brakes on the front don't know if they are stock / granada / other, and drums on back.  The above mentioned size would be suitable for the look I am after, if it would fit and not rub.  I think the 225 is too narrow, I want the meaty look.
I don't like the "Low Profile" look...

Thanks

Keep the input coming !!!

Hello Guys,

Okay, after working on my '55 T-bird, I took the time to do some measurements on the '68 Mustang.

The back space in the Alum. Cobra Shelby Wheels is 5-inch B/S.  I did measure the tread width on the T/As and it measures 9-inches.  The wheel width is 7-inches.  There has been no modification to the fenders.

My opinion on a 8-inch wheel with a 10 to 12-inch tire tread would resuult in rubbing some parts, i.e. exhaust, etc. But if you want to go there, one could consider Wheel spacers.  But this would also result in fender changes.

History,

I have a '67 Camaro with a 12 both rear end.  I have 15X8-inch wide rims with a 12-inch tread tire.  The 3-inch diameter tail pipes rubs.  I used a 1/4 inch spacer to gain clearance for the rear tires.

I do not like hub spacers, but with a 427/600 h/p motor, I needed more tread on the road.

You can make your own choices.

Stay stock.  Always looks the best.  Even on a GM product.

OK...  It's a 428 CJ with the whole Edelbrock Performer RPM setup, cam, lifters, intake, carb, and alum. heads, Hooker ceramic coated headers...  you get the idea... probably 500 Horses maybe more... THAT's why I want LOTS of rubber on the road...  I am VERY interested in the Torque Thrust "D"'s, I like the look, with BFG Radial T/A's... Mustang's Plus handling suspension... I want to know what the setup is for the LARGEST possible rim / tire setup is for the 68 Fastback...  I have heard that the 15 X 8's won't fit on the front... Thanks !!!
