I have a 1970 Mustang Sportsroof
Would like to take a 1989 Mustang 5.0 EFI and T5 transmission and install it into the 70 sportsroof. My questions are...
1. Would like to convert the 5.0 EFI to Carb (302), what would be involved and parts and what other suggestions ?
2. How does the T5 line up with the transmission tunnel hole for the shifter?
3. Goes with #2 can you use the 70 console in the car? meaning is there any modification to the shifter hole in floor?
Thanks and appreciate the help....

Well if you convert too carbureted its not that big a deal. A manifold and carb from an earlier model will do fine. However the distr/coil also need to be changed since the 1989 uses the eec-iv controls. Simply change to an early model distr./coil with a timing gear that is compatible with the roller cam. Remove or disable the knock sensors. Remember the firing order is different and the balance is 50oz in lieu of 28oz on the early model small block so make sure you use a balancer and flywheel that has that imbalance. The T-5 should line up with your original hole pretty closely. Some minor trimming/grinding may be necessary but no major sheetmetal cutting. I see no reason why you cant use the original console depending on what shifter you use for the T-5. Models are available that mimic the original or look like a hurst shifter with the pullback(which I prefer). You could even drill and tap the original stick for placement on the T-5 if you were so inclined so that no one could tell. You will have to shorten your driveshaft and install a new trans crossmember. If you use the early model bellhousing you can use a cable clutch. The T-5 also uses a different yoke which is longer although some use the C4 yoke.
