I was looking for the correct carburetor for my 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang. I have my original 260 V8 engine with original exhaust manifolds (hole in bottom right manifold for choke air heating and return on top via insulated tube) and down draft tube (oil fill is located on the timing chain cover, my intake manifold is stamped J for 260 machined for road draft tube...not PCV). I currently have a 2100 Aurolite for a 1965 mustang with a plugged PCV out of the carburetor spacer.
The reference book I have (Bob Mannel, Mustang and Ford Small Block V8 62-69) says that all 1964 260 V8 carburetors had a venturi diameter of 1.01. Possible correct carburetors for a 1964 1/2 mustang with auto transmission are:
ID Number C4DF-AB C4OF-BR C4ZF-E (with PCV valve) C4ZF-N (used after 5/1/64)
I think the correct carburetor for my mustang given its 19F (June 19) scheduled build date would be the C4ZF-N carburetor, but Pony Carbs says that only the C4ZF-E and C4ZF-F carbs were on 1964 1/2 mustangs and that Ford did not use the C4DF-AB, C4OF-BR, or C4ZF-N carburators at all on mustangs.
I'm also trying to determine the correct set up for my choke air source:
1964 1/2 carburetor choke air source (which impacts type of carburetor used): The choke air source came from filtered air inside the air cleaner (17-inch air cleaner, not 14-inch) via a choke pick-up tube (rubber hose conneted to the air cleaner and routed to a steel tube carrying air to the bottom of the right exhaust manifold for heating). Choke systems drawing air off the air cleaner continued until about April 1964 and then the pick-up source switched to the carburetor air horn (connected to a metal tube off of the air horn) and the air cleaner pick-up tube was eliminated or capped.
Anyone knowing if the C4ZF-N carburetor was used on 64 1/2 mustangs for sure and the correct carburator and choke air source set up, assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you for the table/information on carburetors for mustang 260 V8s. It would be nice to be able to find a carburetor vendor that had one of the carburetors shown in your table other than the C4ZF-E (Auto w/PCV) that was specific to the 64 1/2 mustangs with road draft tubes (no PCV out of intake manifold). I'll keep looking as I'd rather not have to purchase a carburetor with a capped spacer for the PCV option that doesn't even apply to my engine configuration.

I believe Pony Carb is correct.. trust their expertise. I have 64 1/2 (April 1, 1964 #6276 built) with the Autolite 2100 carb.
mine carb is 100% original FOMOCO stamped C4 ZF E Autolite 2100 2 Barrel carburetor clock face reading 1.01

I sent it to Pony Carburetors for a standard resortation (and it is AWESOME) http://amust1964.blogspot.com/2009/03/rebuilt-carburetor-from-pony-carburetor.html

Does your 64 1/2 have a pcv valve or a road draft tube? I'm guessing pcv valve since Ford did not begin reintroducing the road draft tube until May of 64. If your carburetor is original, you should have an automatic with PCV valve, so the C4ZF-E would be correct for your car, however I'm interested in finding someone with an original 260 V8 and original carburetor with a road draft tube to see what Ford paired with their engine.
I don't doubt that Pony Carbs does excellent work, I just find it hard to believe the reference source my information comes from could be that far off as it's the most detailed book on Ford small block engines I've ever seen:
Mustang and Ford Small Block V8, 1962-1969, Vol I & II, by Bob Mannel, 1998.

I would trust Bob's and what it says.

See scanning of Ford parts book above.

I am getting in this discussion a little late, but I have just started restoring my 1964.5 Coupe Mustang. When I purchased the car from the original owner, the only things missing from the entire car (32,000 miles)was the air cleaner box and right valve cover. My car (5F07F199453) was built July 13 at Dearborn. It has the road draft tube from the intake manifold, a blocked off PVC inlet at the carb spacer and carb ID tag # C40F BR. I am trying to figure out what air cleaner box and valve cover it gets. Any thoughts?

Can you tell me your date code on your C4OF-BR carburetor tag? Thanks for providing some very helpful information.

I am currently restoring a 64 1/2 coupe (5FO7F190205) that has been in a barn for over 30 years. I have the road draft tube and the oil fill on the timing cover. I assume the carb is original and is stamped C4OF AE. The carb spacer has a rubber cap. The choke air supply tube is connected to the carb not the air cleaner. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information.

I think from looking at Bob's book, that you definitely have a carb correct for a 260V8 for 1964. The book is showing it normally applicable to the Fairlane, Comet, and Falcon and with the automatic transmission (though used as a replacement for both auto and manual).
Is there a tag on the carb by chance? This with the date code from the tag would help considerably with determining if it was original to the car.
Thanks for contributing to the post.

Unfortunately the carburetor tag was missing. The car is a 3 speed manual.
