Has anyone looked into putting a tiptronic type transmission in a 65 Mustang. It will be connecting to a 289/302 block. I would like to find one that can fit and connect without altering the body too much..

You must be European lwilliford. Tiptronic is a Porsche registered trademark for an automatic trans capable of shifting up and down. I am not sure what you mean by installing one in a mustang, C4 manual shift trans bodies are available but it isnt a popular item for the street. If you have an automatic, let it shift,,,lol. I doubt there is a Porsche trans compatible in any way with a 289 V8 so my guess is your barking up the wrong tree. If your looking for a paddle type shifter, and a manual valve body isnt quick enough for you, I dont know of anyone making such a kit. Maybe you have something else in mind ???

by tiptronic i assume you mean a automatic transmission with the option available to shift over into a mode that lets you manually perform a clutchless shift like on most modern sedans.
my question is why would you ever want to do that to a 65 mustang?

Sorry for the late reply to this thread (I have been on vacation the last 10 days), but I had to reply to this one. Putting aside the problems with grafting in a tiptronic transmission (which I envision as having numerous technical problems), the best alternative I have come up with for upgrading the automatic transmission in an older Mustang is the GearVendors Overdrive. After trying the AOD route I switched gears (pun intended) and installed one in my 1966 and it works flawlessly. It's somewhat expensive, but is probably worth it compared to the many alternatives. It's bullet proof. It has a 400,000 mile warranty. It lets you keep your C4 transmission, which in itself is a fairly bullet proof transmission. It is warranted, I believe, up to 1000hp. At 47mph it simply shifts into 4th gear and drops the rpms by an additional 25%. The only item that needs to be custom fabricated is to shorten the driveshaft, which in reality is something you would have to do on any of the other alternatives anyway.
Ironically, the only other car I have ever owned was a 1975 AMC Gremlin (don't laugh, it was a V-8 Gremlin X that was pretty hot) which had the same overdrive unit. When AMC went out of business the owner of GearVendors, an A/T mechanic at the time, bought the remaining supply of the bendix overdrives because they were bullet proof. He started out by making adapters for the overdrives so they could fit numerous transmissions. When he ran out of the original bendix units he started making them from scratch. The rest is history.
I have no stake in GearVendors, but I recommend it highly as an upgrade to any C4.
