I have a 66 coupe with the 289, 3 spd combo. Its all original (needs some body work, interior and paint). But a friend of mine says that there were not very many 66's with the 3 spd manuel trans. Is this true and where can I find some info about this topic? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well I dont know the number but I dont think its rare. I have had several, of varying years. It was common in those days to pull out the three speed and replace it with a four speed, so you probably dont find a lot of three speeds left anymore. Rare and valuable are two different things.

I have a '66 GT coupe that was factory built with an A-code 289 motor and a 3 speed. Previous owner pulled the 3 speed and installed a C-4 later on. Data plate on door says it originally had a 3 speed. Original owner said he bought it with 3 speed manual and 4.11 rear end to street race back in the day. The 3 speed meant he only had to shift once in most street speed contests while the other guys with 4 speeds had to shift twice. I think 4 speed cars are probaly sought after more by collectors than 3 speeds. Not sure 3 speeds are that rare anyway. Probably built as many as 4 speeds.

My first car was a 66 289 3 speed coupe,I owned a 66 fastback 289 3 speed,I owned a 69 with a 302 3 speed that I immediatly pulled & put a 351C & 4 speed back in,my dad had a 66 289 3 speed coupe, a friend had a 65 fastback 289 3 speed,another friend had a 66 fastback 289 3 speed, ALL my 3 speeds were immediatly pulled after I got my cars and replaced with 4 speed toploaders and I gave the 3 speeds away. I presently own (4)4 speed toploaders (2)2.32 1 of which is in my stang and (1)2.32 & (2)2.78 toploaders that are not in use.
