THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT PRIMERS THAT IT IS BEST TO GO TO THE MANUFACTURERS WEBSITE FOR DETAILS. PPG HAS A PRETTY GOOD ONE EVEN THO THEIR PRODUCTS ARE PRICEY.

As stated above, there are a number of different types of primers and generally the rule of thumb is to stick to one manufacturer from the primers through your final paint. The first primer over bare metal should be an etching primer to ensure that there is a bond between the primer and the metal. After the filler work is complete, you might want to use a two part high build primer and start your blocking process, never going completely through your high build. If you are getting thin in areas, apply more high build and start blocking again. The car should be cleaned before any priming is done. The taped off sections may have to be removed several times during the process as you do not even want dust in those trapped areas. I would also recommend putting down a sealer before the base coat. I painted my own car in a friends garage over an 8 month period and it did not come out too bad. There is a lot of pride in doing your own work, but it can quickly turn to frustration if not done right. Good luck!! P.S. The 67 Fastback IMO is the most beautiful of all of the Mustang body styles.
