68 Mustang 3 Point Seat Belt Conversion

I have a 68 fastback that came factory with the lap belt and shoulder belt.

Anyone having sat in one of these with the shoulder harness on knows that compared to the new 3 point harnesses in modern cars, the old one had no give.  You locked it in place then couldn't reach your stereo knobs, change your 8 track, etc.

I have looked at the numerous kits out there to convert to a 3 point with the inertia lock built in so you can lean forward.  However the few that actually show some pictures show you somehow mounting them not to the top of the roof area where the current shoulder belt mounts, but behind the window.

I am curious if one of these 3 point inertia belts will mount to the seat belt hole above my window as the original one did.  I'd hate to have a gaping hole up in the headliner where the old one was or have to cut some other hole back behind the window.

Any thoughts?

I had a '65 fastback that I put 3 point seat belts in to replace the lap belts. The inertia reel was mounted on the floor corner near the back of the door and snugged up to the front of the rear seat. The pivot point was located on a bracket welded to the roof frame just above the back of the side window almost where a coat hook would have been. The third point was the buckle receptacle mounted to the floor near the driveshaft tunnel on the side of the seat in the center of the car making a true 3 point system with inertia control. The overhead pivot point made it very comfortable and easy to use and was back far enough where it didn't interfere with the looks of the car when not in use.
You could use your current roof attach point as the pivot and mount the inertia real on the corner of the floor behind the drivers seat. It would work great and cover up that hole in the headliner from the old belt too. The belts that have roof mounted pivots work better than the ones that mount to the interior side panels since the belt comes across your shoulder at a better angle. I've used both kinds in early Mustangs and they are both way better than just lap belts alone.
When selecting a floormount belt measure the approximate length you'll need to make the belt go from the floor to the roof and over to the buckle receptacle to be sure you have enough belt length. Some kits are shorter than others and some won't work. Enjoy!

The one I used in my '65 Fastback came from J.C. Whitney! That was many moons ago before there was much choice in 3 points for Mustangs but the belt set-up was first rate, pivoted from the roof and looked great.

The current set-up I have in my '66 Coupe came from Mustangs Plus in Stockton, CA.
and pivots from the rear interior quarter but can be made to pivot off of the roof too. Make sure you know about how much length you are going to need or get the longer one made for the fastback.

My current 3 point belt assembly is made by Custom Accessories Manufacturing and is also available in specific lengths and colors for '68 to '73 coupes/fastbacks and mounts to your original roof belt mounting hole. Only one 1/2 inch hole to drill in the floor pan and you are ready to roll!
