67 mustang with 289. Edelbrock intake and edelbrock carb (650). new timing chain, electronic ditributitor, car has been running rough, cannot get timing set. upon further investigation, the #1 cylinder isnt firing, verified chain was set up right (crankshaft at 0, rotor pointing directly at #1 on cap. engine compression is good on all cylinders, when plug wire is pulled off, there is no change to idle, I have spark at end of plug wire. all other 7 plugs look clean, this one is obviously not firing as its sorta black. what else could be causing the #1 cylinder not to fire?

Maybe you have a bad spark plug. Try swapping one from a cylinder you know is firing and put it in No.1 and see if it makes a difference. Clean the no.1 plug real good too. It may have fouled earlier for some reason or the gap is too wide and just won't fire again until its cleaned and regapped. If the plug keeps getting fouled and looks black, wet and oily then you may have a bad valve guide or valve guide seal that allows oil to pass into that cylinder.

Take off the valve cover and check for a bent/broken pushrod or rocker arm for #1 cylinder.

Ang you may want to do a compression check of that cylinder to see what potential it has to affect the idle. In other words, if the spark is OK and there are no reasons for fuel dispruption, the only choice is you have is a "dead hole" Unfortunately, it happens! Thats why "cylinder balance" tests and testers were invented. good luck, I hope it's only a plug or wire. jlg
