My poor car.. apparently the people I bought it off of in 1990 werenot to kind to it...
After my second engine rebuild in 2 years I had to fix numerous electrical glitches in the system from homemade and incorrect wiring harnesses, chopped dash wires, and 45 years of wear and tear.  I corrected all the broken and bare wires, and found two pig tails near the center of the firewall and tested them for power in various ignition switche posistions.  I wired the radio to it and the first time I turned it up, there was a loud pop and no more dash lights.  I checked all the fuses and replaced a couple foil wrapped ones for good measure. But still no dash lights.  if yu turn the lights on with the dash console out you can ground them to the frame and they work, the courtesy light works fine as does the ALT, oil and highbeam.

Anyideas

What does having the dash console out mean? If you can ground the lights and they light individually, there is nothing wrong with the source (light switch)if they brighten and dim accordingly. If they don't come on when plugged into the inst panel and it's been mounted on the dash, then you most likely have no ground to the inst panel.jlg

I pulled the console out to look for a broken or fried ground.  Using an old trick to make sure we had power and it wasnt a switch or fuse I grounded bulbs to the frame to test for power.

I will look again for a broken ground.  it just was kind of confusing when the whole dash popped like a fuse blowing when I turned the radio up.

Thanks again
