what kind of engine ? with 4 valve heads it has to be a 281 modular engine, but some of the parts wont fit a modular engine. is it a 302 , 351 , ?

the 351 cleveland has 2 valve heads and if you are refering to the 4 on the head by the valve cover that means its a big port head, a 2 would mean a small port head,as for horsepower its hard to say without having all the specs including cam lift and duration but 351c 4v engines are fast !

Yeah as shifthis said the cleveland heads are reffered to often as 2V and 4V heads but that was from 2 barrel and 4 barrel applications. In 72 the compression ratios were lowered  so its hard to tell what you have. Cleveland motors are capable of a lot of horsepower and its generally at the top end due to the size of the (4V) valves and ports. The motors can be doggy at the low end and not feel like much until you get the rpm up past 4,000 or so,,,then they really make HP. Windsors have actually gained in popularity because aftermarket heads  are available now and they are much more plentiful then Clevelands. But they are nice engines, good luck James.

You can shave your heads or rebuild with pistons that give the compression you want-being mindful of high compression vs fuel availability/costs.  An alternative or additional consideration to get more low end response is to select a different rear end gear to match your application-also being mindful of proportionate fuel cost increases as you still have to run high RPMs to get the most out of a 4v engine.

does the 2V get more bottom end than the 4v?

i had 2 351c 4v engines that would rev to 7500 rpm and drove them on the street daily and never had an issue with bottom end. one car was a 69 mustang fastback with a 3.70 rear gear , the other a 66 mustang with 3.5 gear. both engines had big cams closed camber heads and about 11.5:1 compression (back then 98 octain gas was everywhere) headers,dp carb etc. the 69 would run 12.11 in the 1/4 mile with 12" wide street tires but was setup for cornering, i never timed the 66 in the quarter but it blew the doors off camaros , firebirds , etc. if i ever used cleveland heads again i would only use 4v closed chamber heads. it all depends on whats comfortable for you to drive and if the combination of parts are working together. a cam with 270 deg. duration at .050 lift isnt going to work very well with 9:1 compression. i have known guys that drive big block blower cars around on the street that dont idle below 1500 rpm. i cant tell you what you should do only suggest and give my personal prefrences. if you cam has over 250 deg. duration at .050 lift a smaller cam would probably be better on the street. a stick shift car is going to be easier to drive on the street with a big cam than an automatic and high stall converter. also a ford 4 speed toploader only uses about 2 hp in gears 1 to 3 and one tenth of a hp in fourth gear. an fmx uses 23 hp ,a c4 28 hp and the c6 about 55 hp. if it were my car i would keep the heads and if the cam is big switch to a smaller one. compcams will custom grind a cam for your application. this is my recomendation other guys may have different recomendations and their ideas might be better for you than mine......P.S. my dad had a 69 boss 302 which has the 351c 4v type head and larger 2.23 intake valves. his car had a 3.50 rear gear and a close ratio toploader 4 speed (2.32 1st gear) and i drove it often and from a 700 rpm idle in first gear stomp the gas and get pushed back in the seat,it had real good bottom end and was my dads daily driver except when i drove it.
