While driving a 67 289/4 speed toploader with Hurst Competition Plus shifter, the pins holding the shift rods came out of one rod and my searching for a gear to use apparently knocked another off. I used a coat hanger to limp home not being able to specify a gear, but got home.  I've since gotten under the car and reattached the rods with proper clips/bushings, but the tranny won't shift correctly.  The best I can do is first and second.  I have no reason to think it's a trans problem as it was very smooth until I went shiftless.  I also aligned the shifter arms for neutral using the 1/4 inch drill bit. So, I'm thinking that the shifter rods are binding on one another(?) As I encountered the problem after losing the rod placement, I can't mimmick the original. Which way does the shift rod engage the transmission shift ear?  Do they insert from the out side toward the trans body or from the trans side facing outward?  And which ones?? thanks

Also, which ears on the toploader transmission control what gears?  Ears should be back for 1 and 3, forward 2 and 4, back for reverse????  Tranny is in the car and I have get under it-not much wiggle room. I'm having a hard time fixing this problem.  thanks

theres a guy on the web Dan Williams Toploaders and he might be able to email you a hurst installation diagram. i use a no longer made hurst supershifter2 with custom linkage. this is a foto of my linkage set up but its gonna be different from the hurst kit specifically for a mustang...www.flickr.com/42359146@N04/3905297036/
