the bulb for the oil light has been out for quite a while (because i dread having to re-install the gauge cover). anyway i put in a new bulb and it came on momentairly. couldn't get it back on by turning the ignition off/on. when checking the voltage, i only get about 9 volts at the socket. tried cleaning the connections at both ends--still 9 volts. could this drop in voltage be caused by the sending unit itself? Thanks

Thanks, one problem solved?, another created! i replaced the cvr and also the oil pressure sending unit, the idiot light now works but the fuel gauge and water temp gauge have gone crazy. the gas gauge will not register at all for awhile and then suddenly will move to about 3/4 full, then drop back to empty. same with the temp gauge--will register cold then move almost all the way toward hot, then back down. before i replaced the cvr both gauges were not right, but would stay at whatever level they went to. the temp ga. would read almost hot but would start at cold and when the engine warmed up would move almost 3/4 hot and come back down only when the engine cooled. the gas ga. would never register over 3/4 full even after a fill-up, and would run out of gas before the ga. reached the empty mark. guess i could have gotten a bad cvr??, or both gauges bad??, or something else??
HELP, this OLD dumb Ga. boy is DUMBfounded. Thanks

Try another CVR and make sure everything is CLEAN and grounded right. If the guages mostly worked before and the only change was the CVR and oil sending unit then the guages are probably OK and the problem is in the CVR, connections or ground wire. Don't use teflon tape between the sending units and the engine as it acts like an insulator and may not provide proper contact and the proper signal. Use teflon paste instead. It allows sending unit thread to engine contact but still seals the spaces in between. Make sure your ground wire from the instrument cluster in the dash to the car just behind the dash is good. Maybe even run a new one to be sure there isn't a break in the wire.
