I have sold a lot of 60's mustangs in the past few years. I always sell them as-is, but I have a guy now that wants to have my car inspected by a mechanic. He wants to buy on saturday with a post dated money order, I can watch him purchase to verify authenticity, and then have it inspected on Tuesday back in his area. This would allow him my car for the days in between, what are your thoughts on this?? I say he should buy on the spot with cash and that is it, is his request reasonable or what??? I told him he could bring whoever he wants to see the car but he said he doesnt have anyone that could ride with him. Is his request reasonable??? thanks for the input....It seems to me that he just wants a warranty and I cant offer that.

If you lived near each other it wouldn't be a problem to have the car checked out locally and then have him pay you cash if he was satisfied. He may be an honest guy who doesn't want to get burned anymore than you do but unless he gives you cash before taking the car out of town I'd be careful. Either he should find a shop near you that he trusts to do an inspection before he leaves or you take the car to him and his mechanic if he doesn't live too far away for you to travel and finish the deal there in cash or cashiers check at his bank. Most used car sales are as-is but I sold a a 64 1/2 to a guy who wanted to be sure there were no major problems before he paid me. I agreed to take it to a shop of his choice and let that shop inspect it at his expense while I waited with the car. It checked out fine and the shop informed the buyer by phone it was good to go an hour later. We met shortly after that at his bank near the shop and finalized the deal. It took a few hours out of my day but I sold the car at a good price to a satisfied buyer. The inspection also removed me from any future liability or claims. The car was good when he drove off in it and the shop inspection report was my witness to that fact. Done deal.
