the 16:1 box was used for power steering and quick ratio manual , the 65 shelby had a longer pitman and idler arm that was used with the 16:1 box for even quicker steering. there is a shop called MAECO MOTORSPORT that builds 65-66 gt350 shelbys for customers to roadrace and they themselves roadrace and they dont use the quick steering idler arm and pitman arm due to the increase in bump steer and not enough outer tierod travel to take the xtra bumpsteer out. i roadrace a 65 and i use a flaming river brand 16:1 box and no quick steer kit.

I have a factory installed quick ratio steering box (16:1) that came with my GT when new. It is the same box and ratio that is used on the power steering cars. If you don't want power steering you can just disconnect the power stuff and get a new non-power drag link to make yours a manual quick ratio set-up. The little early Mustangs are pretty light so power steering seems overkill to me. I like the simple manual steering since you have a better feel of the road. You are also saving horsepower that would be used to drive the power steering pump. You also have a less cluttered engine compartment, less fan belts to squeal and adjust, and less hoses to leak. Unless you will be parallel parking all day I'd go with the manual quick ratio GT set-up.
