I have a 1966 mustang with the 200ci six. Long story short I narrowed it down to no fuel to the carb. I checked the fuel line from the tank and it appears to flow fine. Pump does not appear to pump the fuel from the tank. Question is what type of fuel pump and fuel filter should be on this car? The current fuel pump has the filter on top of the pump like I have seen on my dads 1964 1/2. But all I can find as a replacement pump does not have the filter on the pump. Anyone have a source for the fuel pump w/ filter or is it required? What would you recommend?

1965 Mustang motors used a fuel pump with the fuel filter cannister attached at the BOTTOM of the fuel pump. 1966 Mustang motors went with fuel pumps that had no fuel filter cannister attached at all. Ford use an in-line fuel filter between the fuel pump and the carb instead. The fact that you say your fuel pump has a fuel filter cannister on TOP says two things: It might be a 1965 unit on your 1966 and it might be installed improperly. Either fuel pump should work on your 1966 motor if set-up right. The correct unit for '66 didn't have a fuel filter cannister on the pump however.

I have owned the car for over 15 years and it has always run fine until last weekend when it would not start. I do not see an in-line fuel filter. Where was the in-line fuel filter located? At this point I'm pretty sure the problem is the fuel pump but I have never had one just die with no warning (leaking, loss of power or poor idle). Would you recommend I return the fuel system to the original 66 fuel pump configuration? Is there an issue with using a 1965 pump on a 66? As I recall the fuel pump cam rides on a lobe in the engine - Maybe I need to verify that nothing broke inside first.

It was mentioned earlier that either a '65 or '66 fuel pump will work. Only difference is the '65 has a built in fuel filter canister and the '66 doesn't. Most '66 set-ups used a small seperate fuel filter that screwed into the carb fuel bowl inlet and the carb side of fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb attached to the inlet side of the fuel filter. However, any aftermarket in-line fuel filter can be put between the fuel pump and the carb somewhere in the fuel line unless you are going to do a concourse resto. You can buy the "correct" filters from vintage Mustang vendors if that is the case. If your '65 fuel pump fuel filter canister is clogged it will rteduce flow to your carb and cause problems. Sometimes the old fuel pumps just develop a diaghram leak and stop working right. I had one go out very slowly on me with no outward sign of a problem until it just didn't work right anymore. I'd replace yours since it is 15 years old and probably tired anyway. They are cheap and easy to replace. If you go with the '66 style be sure to use an in-line fuel filter of some sort to prevent crud from getting into your motor. You can remove the coil wire that runs from the top of the distributor to the center of coil and then disconnect the carb end of the fuel line from the carb and place in a plastic milk container or something like it. Then turn the motor over for a few seconds and see if fuel is being pumped into the container. If so, then the pump is working to some degree. Be sure that no fuel spills on your motor or gets near any spark to avoid chance of fire.

Thanks for the info on the pump - just wasn't sure if there was a difference that mattered. I already disconected the fuel line from the carb and no fuel is being flowing to the carb. I'm not concourse with this car - just a weekend driver. I will replace the fuel pump.

Sounds like a good plan all around. Good luck.
