I recently got a 64 1/2 and was wondering if i could rebuild the sending unit, or if that is even the problem but the fuel gauge always reads empty, so what could it be and how could i fix or rebuild the origonal because to my knowledge it is all origonal and i want to keep it that way.
Thanks

It easier and cheper to just buy and install a new sending unit if that is your problem. Are any of the other guages not working? Could be your constant voltage regulator on the back of the instrument cluster is bad. Could be a bad guage or a loose wire too.
If you disconnect the wire that goes to the sending unit at the bottom of the gas tank and ground it to the frame using aligator clips or whatever and then turn your ignition switch to on the fuel guage should move if the guage and wiring are working. That will help narrow things down a bit.

all the other gauges work great the fuel guage just doesnt move from the e it will move from the very bottom of the gauge to the e but then it stops no matter how much fuel is in the tank. coes that narrow it down at all?

Buy a new sending unit, install, save the old one and see if you can determinate the problem. I can see not changing interior, wheels, or something very visible but a fuel guage sending unit inside a gas tank is pretty hidden.
