I have a 1964.5 coupe with 289, previous owner changed from generator to alternator, i purchased a new wiring harness, headlight, voltage regulator, hrn and also alt harness. The Alternator is a Tuff Stuff , the problem is the gen light is on and i have a left over wire at the alt, white with black strip, there is a post at back of alt but wiring diagram says leave empty, any ideas, thanks

Hi! The first question I have is are you sure that the alt. is charging? You can check by checking the voltage at the battery (not running) it should be around 11 -12 volts. Then start the car and check if the voltage is higher Should be 12.5 - 14.5. If there is no change the Alt. is not charging. You can also turn on the head lights and see if the voltage drops. You might also see the lights brighten if you increase the RMP. I assume (always dangerous) that the Alt is a autolite type (STA, FLD, BAT and Ground) according to my '66 book it calls for the White-black to connect the the STA; The white to the FLD; The Red-Black to GROUND; the Black-yellow to BAT. Also On the voltage regulator make sure the - plug out is connected to the Green-Red strip wire. Hope this helps! If not let us know!

Maybe the Tuff Stuff alternator is a "one wire" model. If so, and it is charging, I would remove the GEN lamp and install a voltmeter somewhere.

Good point on the one wire Alt. If that is the case make sure you are not using the external volt. reg. The single wire has an internal unit. I have a single wire and haven't been able to get my amp gage to work and have been told that it won't. Don't know that is correct but it makes since.
