I have recently purchased a 1966 Mustang (a car I have always wanted). I have very little mechanical experience but getting close to retirement and wanted to purchase this automobile so that I can have the opportunity to learn. Recently I was driving on the freeway and the engine began to periodically cut out. The engine never quit altogether but just cut out. My best guess is that I may need to change the plugs. Are their any other ideas out there?

What engine/tranny is in the car. Check your fuel filter. A clogged or nearly clogged filter may not deliver enough fuel. If the motor cut out when cold you may need to adjust your choke. Need more detailed info to really diagnose. Need engine type, engine temp and speed when motor cuts out. Does it just hesitate or really try to quit until you take your foot off the gas?

Remember tune-ups? Since you just bought the car it may have been awhile since its had one. That includes new plugs, ignition wires, points ( you need to replace with a Pertronix unit),check the rotor and clean the inside and outside of the distributor cap, fuel filter, air filter, ignition timing and carburator adjustments. Check any vacuum lines for deterioration. Check the output of the fuel pump. If the car has been sitting awhile it may have bad fuel. If the tank has a drain plug you may want to drain it.
