I have a 65 200 6 cyl that I am in the process of restoring. It will start and run but will not idle. As long as you keep the gas pedal depressed it will run, but dies if you take foot off gas. Almost like a vacuum leak. I have a rebuild kit ordered for the carb (Holley 1940 replacement) but I am trying to eliminate vacuum leaks. There aren't many vacuum hoses but is there an intake manifold gasket? It looks like intake manifold is cast part of the head, but I have seen an intake manifiold gasket listed as a part. Any input would be appreciated. Thanx

Is it stick or automatic? if its an automatic there could be a vaccum from the intake manifold going to the trans. But you can deffinetly tell if its a vaccum leak, mine would idle but it was extreamly rough. Check the needles on your carb, if they are outta wack it wont idle, they are the vaccum adjust needles usually at the base of the carb. on an autolite 2100 its 2 complete turns out from closed EACH! then continuing to turn them both (or 1) at the same rate in 1/4 turn incriments untill it idles reallllly smooth then tighten them both(or 1) just a tad. I dont know if you have a 2bl or a single but if its a 2 then you must make sute to adjust them exactly the same. If it isnt the carb then the intake could be leaking, a dead giveaway is leaking oil from around the manifold, but not always. Hope I helped. JC

Spray carb cleaner around the intake manifold where it mates to the cykinder head and around the base of the carb. Focus the spray. If the engine rpm increases suddenly then you have found the location and source of your leak... if there is one. Also make sure your choke works properly. Too loose, too tight or stuck will not let the engine run well.
