ok so here is the problem about a week ago my water pump cracked so I had to replace it so I did this sunday but today when I'm driving to school the car either won't shift or it will take too long to shift to the next gear now my car is automatic and isn't leaking at all from the hoses or water pump its self it didn't have this shifting problem before I replaced the water pump and I was wondering if these two could be connected at all and if so/not what should I do to fix it

I would take a look at the vacuum lines, particularly the one that runs down the back of the engine to the modulator on the tranny. Also, check out the kickdown linkage from the carb to the tranny.

hey i went and checked it and I'm not sure what this means but the choke plate on the carb was stuck wide open and actually here is a picture

and when i pulled the throttle back a bit a little bit of smoke came out it is a little hard to see but if you look closely it is there

with the carb off fast idle... the choke blade is locked open.. unless the throttle lever is moved off its stop...

check the vacuum hose going to the modulator...

when the modulator hose is off.. the trans will start in first gear.. and not want to shift to second or third.. and will act like its in neutral when you take your foot off the gas..

i would also like you to stand to the side of the belts...  when the engine is started..  see if any of the pulleys is wobbling just slightly..   if any are.. that is probably why the water pump cracked..

as the belt goes around.. any bent pulleys will change the tension on the various pulleys..   this will flex the pump body until it fractures...  i have seen it many times... and it does not take much to do it..

i have also seen a few fan belts .. that were mis cut... so they would ride up and down in the groove.. this indicates they are different widths instead of being the exact width as they go around.. this will also change the tension... and wipe out pump after pump after pump...

BENT FAN blades...  fan blades that are out of balance..   fan blades that are missing blades..   fan blades that are modified and not rebalanced.. can also ruin many pumps...

thanks and i thought that caused my pump to break at first to until i opened it up and realized the one who owned the car before me(my brother)never put any coolant in it just tap water and so when i opened it up it was rusted plus it was kind of a crappy water pump but anyway thank you for your piece of insight i will check that tomorrow when i get a chance hopefully that is it and not the transmission failing

The choke and the tranny are not related. The choke should be wide open when the engine is at normal operating temp. The "smoke" is a fuel/air vapor fog caused by fuel being squirted into the warm intake manifold by the accelerator pump when you move the throttle open. That is also normal.

Check to be sure you have enough tranny fluid in the tranny by checking the tranny dipstick when the engine is warm and running in Park. If it is low then it may not shift right.

hey just wondering(this may seem like a really dumb question)where is the modulator for me to check and which hose is it that goes to it can't find any diagram in the manual or online that answers my question and I'm kind of a novice at this

The modulator vacuum line is the only one going off the back of the intake manifold down to the transmission. If you are under the car it is the only vacuum line attached to the transmission.

Take the air cleaner off and look behind the carb to confirm the modulator vac hose is connected to the brass block at the back of the manifold.  You may want to also double check that the trans throttle position cable didn't fall off of the trans of throttle lever.

The tranny vac modulator is is on the passenger side of the tranny behind the dipstick. Your vacuum line should be attached to it at that end and to the rear intake manifold brass block on the other end.

Hi - this sounds like vacuum modulator.  Either the vacuum modulator has ruptured internally or one or both vacuum hoses to the vacuum modulator are split, leaking, or disconnected.  The lazy or no upshift is a vacuum modulator issue.  If the vacuum modulator ruptures internally, your engine will draw transmission fluid into the intake and burn transmission fluid.  Sometimes, this is noticeable by white smoke from the tailpipe (and carburetor).  Most obvious will be transmission fluid loss - but no leak on the floor.  I think the water pump replacement and transmission upshift problem are a weird coincidence.  Both happened at the same time - but are unrelated.  Feel free to email me at thesmart67@msn.com.
