Hey, all. I have a 1966 convertible mustang without the Vin plate on the door. How can I decode the engine compartment plate?

The Vin # should be stamped(I don't think it has a plate) on the top of of the firewall under the hood on the drivers side. If you had a door plate the vin# on both should match. The vin should decode the same. Try this link.

The vin basically will only tell you year, location of manufacture, body style, engine, and consecutive manufacture number. The rest of the information you will need was on the door plate. The only way I know of to get that back is to get a Marti Report. I believe he can also have a duplicate door tag made for you. Try this link.

If you have any trouble, post the vin# here and someone will help. Hope this is what you were looking for!

The vin number on a '66 is on the driver's side front fender under the hood between the shock tower and the radiator support.

you may also have what is called a buck plate. going to Marti's website will help you understand that also.

Thanks Guys. The sites were a big help! I discovered that my car was originally Vintage burgundy with a white power top and black interior. The car is now silver blue with the blue and white pony interior. What do you suggest...If I were to replace the door vin plate, should I specify the original stats to match the buck plate or the way the car looks today?

If it is going to be a concourse car or sell it then go with original. If you are going to keep it as-is and just have fun with it then do it either way.
