Could a household steam cleaner be used to get carpet to flatten out sufficiently for installation? The ol' sitting in the sun thing helped a bit, but I feel like I should iron it, or maybe apply steam to the back. Thanks!

Steam won't hurt it any. Heat and dampness should get you the result you're seeking. Sometimes, even hot summer sun doesn't help. It's a good idea to let carpet sit open for a few days prior to installation. Steam will make it flexible.

When I was younger and still working in the garage, I used to work next door to an upholsterer. He had a commercial version of a steamer that the used for seat covers, roof trim and any thing else that need to be stretched or de-wrinkled. Your proposal seems like a good idea (but try not to get the carpet too wet or you could have a mold/mildew issue to contend with).jlg

Just put it in. Gravity and floor mats will eventually smooth the carpet out real fine. I put my new carpet kit in and it looked kinda lumpy for a few days but after that everything smoothed out just fine.
