Hey everyone. I recently got a T-10 transmission put in my 65 Mustang. I ended up getting a new clutch kit, and i also replaced the drive shaft with a '66 one, yoke, and installed the rear tranny seal too. so i brought my car down and, after oil, i turned it on. The car will run, and sound fine, until i let go of the clutch, and it shuts off. Now, the gears enter fine, so i don't think they are jammed or anything. I'm turning the car on while in neutral, but as soon as i let go of the clutch, it dies.
help out?

i bet that if you put it in neutral.... and you released the clutch. that the transmission will probably move in reverse...

with the back wheels in the air..    and the gear shifter in neutral.. is the drive shaft free to spin???? not just the wheels .. the driveshaft..

its possible..  to have the transmission in reverse...    and in a forward gear also..

did you check that the shifter in neutral is actually centered where you can insert a 3/16 pin through the 3 arms.. ???

when i had my car up, on and in neutral, the rear tires WOULD spin backwards. So im gonna see if the shifter is centered... thanks.

i'm having another problem, people...
i want to scoot my car up a little bit in the garage before i jack it, but the car's brakes are locked. The car's in neutral, and the parking is pushed all the way in. I think this has to do with my first problem???

PUSH the clutch in.. engine off.. see if the car will now roll forward..

thats another sign the car is Shift LEVER is in reverse...  the upper part selects between 3 levers... if you push one out of place..  like reverse...  the shifter will be in neutral but the transmission will still be in reverse...

you have to START with the transmission in NEUTRAL .. at the transmission..  not at the shifter..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
when i had my GTO.  i made a shifter from bar stock... looked like a lenco shifter with 3 levers sticking up...
when i parked my car.. i shoved it into a forward gear.. usually first.. and also i shoved the reverse lever into gear.. this LOCKED the driveshaft and the rear end.. so the car would NOT roll.
the only draw back was the shift pattern was odd..
it was
31R
nnn
42
so in first gear.. i shoved the middle lever forward from neutral.. for second i pulled it back two notches...
for third.. i shoved the middle lever forward one while pushing forward with my thumb on the left lever.. as the center lever reached the shift interlock inside the transmission.. it would slide into third gear nicely..  then two notches back for 4th gear..
4-Speed Floor and Console Shift
Place the hand shifter lever in the neutral position, then raise the car on a hoist.
Insert a 1 / 4 inch rod into the alignment holes of the shift levers.
If the holes are not in exact alignment, check for bent connecting rods or loose lever locknuts at the rod ends. Make replacements or repairs, then adjust as follows.
Loosen the three rod-to-lever retaining locknuts and move the levers until the 1 / 4 inch gauge rod will enter the alignment holes. Be sure that the transmission shift levers are in neutral and that the reverse shifter lever is in the neutral detent.
Install the shift rods and torque the locknuts to 12-15 ft. lbs. on 1964-65 transmissions, and 18-23 ft. lbs. on 1966 and later transmissions.
Remove the 1 / 4 inch gauge rod.
Operate the shift levers to assure correct shifting.
Lower the car and road-test it.
If you have a floor jack with rollers, jack up the rear end in the center of the pumpkin and scoot it forward.
another update: I turned the car on (on four stands), and initially the rear tires were spinning backwards. Gear shift lever still in neutral... I left the hex key in the 3 levers, so i didn't try to put a gear in.
I left the car running for about 10 minutes.
wheels stopped spinning...
now the cars warmed up,and the drive shaft is turning slowly counter-clockise and the rear LEFT tire turns forward a bit then stops..
Alright, forum.
I replaced the rod linkage in alignment with the gear shift levers. Tightened the lock nuts accordingly, and pulled the alignment pin out.
I put the car down, turned it on, put it in reverse, released the clutch, and the car rolled forward.
Help?
something is really strange...
is the drive shaft free to turn in neutral????
could you post some better pictures of the shift linkage on the side of the transmission...
with the alignment pin in..  the transmission output shaft/ driveshaft should be free to spin..
if you have to ..  with the rear wheels jacked up and the brakes off...
start pushing and pulling levers.. till you can spin the drive shaft freely... THATs neutral...
you only have 3 levers and 9 positions..
4/N/3        2/N/1        and reverse could be either    R/N  or   N/R
center the two that have 3 positions..
that leaves ONE... with 2 positions..
more pictures please...
pictures are nice..    they can help...  as i cannot see though your eyeballs...
more pictures...
