Hey we need help,
We have a 65 200/6 C4 trans. It all started when it would slip in an out when you warm up the car. Then we saw a small amount of fluid on the floor. We warmed it up for a drive and it stated to slip in and out and then no gears forword at all. Just Rev.gear. Had to drive home backward Ha ha ah. We changed the fliter and oil. No change. WOW Need help!!

Hey thanks for the Info. Yes the fluid was not pink. But why is the fluid coming out of the bellhousing? Is there a seal in front? Also how hard is it to change the bands? Would the fluid leak out if the fluid level is low?

Mike,
You need to get a C4 overhaul manual or the Factory shop manual to answer your questions. It's not too hard to do but it does require some mechanical aptitude and reference data to do the rebuild.

mike.. it really does sound like you lost a front pump seal.. but on a C4..   usually the front pump bushing slides out also..

this sometimes spins and wipes out the front pump..   running dry can damage the front pump housing as the pump gears slide in a steel on cast iron slot..  clearances open up and the pump is ruined..

C4 transmissions are NOT that hard to rebuild..    you have a 65 to 69 model..  and you will need to know if you have a green dot version by looking at your gear shifter indicator inside the car..

an easy rebuild can only require a few specialized tools.. like an automatic transmission clutch spring compressor..  and a place to wash the parts in..  a work bench with enough room to lay them out in order  of disassembly.. so you can work on one section at a time and then it will all be lined up.

there is a slight difference between green dot transmissions and other C4 transmissions..

i have seen at least a dozen articles in the over 50 car and truck magazines on rebuilding the C4 transmission..

including a fairly good on over in one of the truck magazines.

most repair manuals cover C4 rebuilding..

depending on where you live.   there should be at least ONE  automatic transmission parts supplier.. this is not a transmission shop.. but a place who supplies hard and soft parts to transmission shops..

on the side of your transmission is .. should be a metal tag..   1" tall.. 3" long with a series of numbers and letters.. to describe exactly what your transmission is..   do not just go by the cast in numbers on the case..

65 to 69 units take one kit..    70 to 81 units a different kit..  and you could have almost any unit in that model..

the biggest difference EXTERNALLY is the manual lever ... what your gear shift rod hooks too.. there are probably 2 dozen different versions...   the torque converters between the early and 70 up are different in spline counts..  and the internal gear ratios are different..

one more thing.. when the front pump seal goes.. you really need to closely inspect the torque converter hub.. that its NOT worn down..

type C4 into the search window above right. for some articles on rebuilding it..   there are 4 mustang magazines.. to also check.....

if you click the search link right at the top of this forum post.. and put C4 in that.. probably a year or two back.. i posted a bunch of links to the various C4 articles here in the magazines..  i spend hours searching them out..    not something i want to do again.. my user name back then was either waynep7122 or waynep712    but type in c4.

Hey, Sweet...Thanks for the info. That will help. Sounds like a good over haul will do. I did put a torque converter in about 150 miles ago. Yes it is a show car! but it still didn't act right after that was done. Took a little time to go into drive just slip in and out. May be at that time it was the front pump? Wow, now things are coming together now. What you think?
thanks
